Rockland is a bi-lingual small town located about 40 km East of Ottawa that is part of the city of Clarnece-Rockland and is part of the National Capital Region. Founded in 1868 as a parish, the town got its start when William Cameron Edwards opened a saw mill the same year. Prior to that, the area was wilderness that farmers cleared for farming. Driven by the expansion of the Grand Trunk Railroad in 1888, the town began to increase with the ability to transport wood and merchandise. In 1908, a second railroad was constructed to connect Ottawa and Hawkesbury further driving population growth. This allowed area people to commute to Ottawa for goods and services and return home the same day for just 75 cents. The saw mill closed in 1926 due to economic turmoil caused from World War I, and saw the population move to neighboring towns for work. Economic recovery began in 1939 with the start of World War II and the population grew as soldiers returned from war. Throughout the 1970’s Rockland hovered around 3500 residents, but has grown significantly since the turn of the century to a population of about 11,100.
While small in population, Rockland is a hot bed for hockey. Rockland is the home to the Canada International Hockey Academy. This is a secondary prep school academy that blends academic excellence with hockey excellence. The challenging prep-school setting is the ideal learning environment for student-athletes to succeed in school and hockey. The educational experience is second to none and the hockey experience is just as important. The athletes get access to world class facilities, coaching and training. Since 2011, this academy has trained many future stars in professional hockey including NHL players.
Rockland is also a fishing hotbed with its proximity to the Ontario River. There are fishing tours, rental boats or fish from the bank. The river is known for walleye, pike, musky and channel catfish.
The Clarence-Rockland Museum has been open since 2010. In the site of the former Ste-Famille school located at 687 Laurier St, Rockland, Ontario, the building was originally erected in 1909. It features 9 rooms housing pictures, documents, ancient books, 78 rpm records, military medals, tools, etc.
Rockland is also home to the Joël Gauthier skatepark. The Park allows amateur skateboarders, roller bladders and BMX riders to practice their sports in a safe environment. The Park is a victim of its success and is in need a expansion due to the popularity.
